Our play-based program helps transition children from the comforts of home to the unknowns of elementary school. We offer programs for both 3 and 4 year old children. For both programs, parents may choose whether to have their child attend one or two sessions per week. Parents are required to participate in the class by being a parent helper. During the course of the school year, the children are taught important skills that will prepare them for kindergarten. They will learn social skills such as listening, cooperation, taking turns, following rules, and respect for others. They will improve their gross motor skills through gym time and action songs, as well as their fine motor skills through crafts and play time in the learning centre. We also focus on pre-academic skills such as the alphabet, counting, and phonics. We believe in the education of the whole child and do our best to foster each child’s unique capabilities.

In addition to regular classes, we also take the children on field trips throughout the school year. All of the classes have a chance to visit the Yorkton Fire Protective Services Fire Hall and the Yorkton Public Library. The 3 year olds also visit the Gloria Hayden Centre, and the 4 year olds have trips to the Western Development Museum and a kindergarten class at one of the elementary schools in Yorkton. Special visitors come into our classes to speak with the children as well. In the past we have had an RCMP member speak about safety, health professionals teach the children about healthy eyes and teeth, and Yorkton Terriers hockey players come in to read books and sing with the children. Each week of the school year at the Yorkton Nursery School Co-operative has a different theme. This gives us a chance to learn about a variety of topics with the children and it keeps the children excited about school. Each week the stories, crafts, and class discussions are based on the current theme. We encourage you to explore and discuss the current theme with your child. Your child may be able to go to class and teach their teacher something new!
