Our Programs

Holistic curriculum to promote the child’s character

Our Programs

Our play-based program helps transition children from the comforts of home to the unknowns of elementary school. We offer programs for 3 and 4-year-old children. Parents may choose whether to have their child attend one, two, or three sessions per week. Parents are required to participate in the class by being a parent helper. During the course of the school year, the children are taught important skills that will prepare them for kindergarten. They will learn social skills such as listening, cooperation, taking turns, following rules, and respect for others. They will improve their gross motor skills through gym time and action songs, as well as their fine motor skills through crafts and play time in the learning centre.

We also focus on pre-academic skills such as the alphabet, counting, and phonics. We believe in the education of the whole child and do our best to foster each child’s unique capabilities.
In addition to regular classes, we also take the children on field trips throughout the school year. Some of our past trips include visits to the Yorkton Fire Protective Services Fire Hall, Yorkton Public Library, Gloria Hayden Centre, DreamLand, Extravadance Studio and the Western Development Museum and a kindergarten class at one of the elementary schools in Yorkton. Special visitors come into our classes to speak with the children as well. In the past we have had an RCMP member speak about safety, health professionals teach the children about healthy eyes and teeth, and Yorkton Terriers hockey players come in to read books and sing with the children. Each week of the school year at the Yorkton Nursery School Co-operative has a different theme. This gives us a chance to learn about a variety of topics with the children and it keeps the children excited about school. Each week the stories, crafts, and class discussions are based on the current theme. We encourage you to explore and discuss the current theme with your child. Your child may be able to go to class and teach their teacher something new! For more information on classes, approved snacks, school supplies, toilet training, & other policies please refer to our Parent Handbook.

YNSC is thrilled to announce the launch of Little Friends Playgroup for Children with ASD.

Little Friends Playgroup is designed to help families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder connect and become each other’s support system. Our main objective is to work with each child towards their personal goals through positive play within a group setting using strategies such as visuals, social stories, positive reinforcement, modeling and prompting.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Yorkton Kinsmen for supporting this new program with a $5000 donation.

Once registered, an application will be emailed and the teachers will conduct individual interviews with each family. This process will allow us to ensure that we have the correct balance of staff to meet the children’s needs and allow for incorporating additional supports or resources tailored to each child. Little Friends Playgroup offers small class sizes, with classes being 1.5 hours in length once per week. Volunteering time as a parent helper is not a requirement for this class.
